چکیده
In order to improve their long-term viability, wave energy converters (WECs) need be able shed loads when a threshold condition is exceeded. As shown by Tom et al. (2016) [1], provision of adjustable flaps within the body an oscillating surge converter (OSWEC) allows pass through device. A control system may then open and close waves approaching device exceed preset thresholds. The variable-geometry OSWEC (VG-OSWEC) concept studied in this paper bottom-hinged, rectangular paddle with five elliptical cross-section embedded into face paddle. System ID tests were conducted on VG-OSWEC at 1:14 scale basin. Free decay showed that damping was distinctly nonlinear fully open, natural frequency increased 40% compared closed configuration. Tests regular conditions used develop response amplitude operator for rotational motion about hinge. These results numerical simulations run using WEC-Sim/WAMIT ANSYS AQWA, show strong agreement flap conditions. regular-wave measurements also excitation moment hinge reduced up 60% open. experiments serve demonstrate potential variable geometry design survive harsh ocean environments.

Interactions Between an Oscillating Wave Surge Converter and a Heaving Wave Energy Converter
In this paper, we investigate the mutual hydrodynamic interactions between two different kinds of devices, namely, an Oscillating Wave Surge Converter modeled as an oscillating flap and a generic Heaving Wave Energy Converter modeled as a vertical truncated cylinder. A three-dimensional mathematical model based on linear potential flow theory is developed. It is assumed that the effects of the ...
متن کاملEffect of a straight coast on the hydrodynamics and performance of the Oscillating Wave Surge Converter
This paper describes the behaviour of a flap-type oscillating wave energy converter near a straight coast. The mathematical formulation is based on a linear potential flow model. Application of Green’s theorem to a semi-infinite fluid domain yields a hypersingular integral equation for the velocity potential which is solved using a series expansion of Chebyshev polynomials. Extremes in the hydr...

This paper presents a recent study on the design and analysis of an oscillating surge wave energy converter (OSWEC). A successful wave energy conversion design requires balance between the design performance and cost. The cost of energy is often used as the metric to judge the design of the wave energy conversion (WEC) system, which is often determined based on the device’s power performance; t...

متن کاملAnalytical and computational modelling for wave energy systems: the example of oscillating wave surge converters
The development of new wave energy converters has shed light on a number of unanswered questions in fluid mechanics, but has also identified a number of new issues of importance for their future deployment. The main concerns relevant to the practical use of wave energy converters are sustainability, survivability, and maintainability. Of course, it is also necessary to maximize the capture per ...
